Homeschool Village ~ Self-Evaluation

Homeschool Village

This week's topic at The Homeschool Village has to do with self evaluation and here’s the question ~ “If you were to "grade" yourself on homeschooling this past year ... what "grade" would you have earned? What if your children were grading you?

Honestly? There are more times than not that this would be an ‘ouch’ moment for me. Yes, we accomplish the bulk of what I plan for us to do, but not all of the time that we’re working is … well, spent appropriately.

THAT is something that I need to change and set some big ol’ limits for myself on. I have a tendency to get sidetracked and if the laptop is sitting nearby, I can quickly get sucked in and not doing things that I should be…as in spending time teaching my kids.

If I had to grade myself, I would have to say an A for effort but more likely a B/C on follow-through and attention span. {grins}

What would my kids say? Well, they are at their first week-long overnight camp this week and truthfully I MISS THEM!!! Which is most likely making me realize how much more attention I need to pay to them, how much less irritated I need to be with them throughout the day ~ and what I REALLY need to be focusing on.

Ok…that’s all. I’m done.

  • oh I love this - the laptop is a big distraction. The end of the year I found myself saying, "ok, hold on a sec" while I finished one more thing. I'm making a promise to both of us - the computer will only be used during school for school!

thanks for joining us each week - cooler than those denim diapers!! =)

  • Life is full of distractions and I am learning that focus is huge especially in homeschooling! My girls have to learn to do their work while a baby is crying or their preschool sister 'gets' to watch a movie while they work. I too, have to be able to 'shut out' the phone or not get 'sucked in' by the computer. I need to teach by example on this one too!

Thanks for sharing today! I love your blog and all the amazingly useful information you share here.

  • I'm right there with you. It dawned on me the other day that I was spending more time looking for cute things for my preschooler to do, and then talking about them on homeschooling forums, than I was actually doing. I caught myself saying "when mommy is finishing what she's doing" too many times. When she asked me to close my computer, I knew I needed to reevaluate what I was doing.

  • laptop? what laptop? I am not on my laptop! (EEK! I better got off this laptop so it's true!)

  • I am SO with you on turning off the laptop (or having DH hide it from me before he leaves for work until school is done)! Honestly, though, my kids get distracted by things too. We need to get more focused this year as well. I'm sure we'd finish our lessons faster that way!

  • oh the laptop is a big distraction at our house too. This week I've actually done a pretty good job of staying away from it when we need to be doing school.

  • You ladies don't know what an encouragement you all are to me! Seriously, I thought I was the only mom who was sucked into the computer when I should be paying more attention to my kiddos! Just reading your posts makes me want to be more disciplined in this area. I need to make some rules for myself in this area and stick with them. My other area that I need to work on is to get up earlier so that we start school earlier.

  • I made a rule for myself that worked AMAZINGLY this past year- I don't touch the laptop until 7pm, when, yes, believe it or not, all the kids are in bed! In the summer, we let them stay up a little later (7:30-8ish) but until they are out of sight, so is the laptop:)

  • oh my...I am so relieved to know that so many others fall prey to the computer. Doesn't make it okay, but I won't beat myself up so bad now!
I don't want to think about my grade for the last year. We had a new baby who became mobile in the fall, and that threw us off more than I ever could have imagined. This year is going to be different--i'm determined! We did what needed, but not what I wanted to last year.

  • i have a toddler and read your posts and have been very, very impressed with how much you do and how creative you are... I am in awe of you!! Don't be too hard on yourself... none of us are perfect and reflection is all about seeing what we can do better.
