Homeschool Village ~ Back to School Traditions
This week the question at Homeschool Village is: “How do you celebrate back to homeschooling or what traditions have you started for the new school year?”
For the last two years, our ‘tradition’ has been to make funnel cakes for breakfast on the first day of homeschool. Because nothing else will help you have a calm and relaxing first day like sugaring your kids up, right? The kids do enjoy it too, because just the other morning the girls asked if I would make funnel cakes for breakfast. When I said “Not until the first day of school,” McKenna answered, “But I haven’t had them since I was SEVEN!”
What traditions do you have for the first day of school? Don’t forget to visit Homeschool Village and see what other moms are sharing about this topic!

But first, I need to think of something to make the first day of school special. I was just going to start. oops! ;-)

We have a not back to school party on the day regular school starts. We go to the park or somewhere where it is normally crowded and enjoy the place all to ourselves. As for the start of our own school we just start, but a fancy breakfst sounds like a good idea. I'll have to remember that for next year as we started back last month.

This is our first year to homeschool, so I'm still working out the plans, but, I definitely want to take the twins picture on the first day and the last day:) I think it will be a great way to show how much they've grown through the year.

I took pictures of my children when they went off to their first day of school. I did not homeschool my children. My niece, nephew and two of my grandsons are homeschooled and I am going to suggest they take a picture of their first day to kick off the year, print it out and post it in their journal. Then at the end of the year they can look back and see how much they have grown. You could do a math lesson with this by measuring how tall they are and then revisit it every four months or so and watch their growth. Thanks for the post it got me thinking. :) Joyce

We did a treasure hunt around the yard for their school supplies. We are going to do it again this year and make it a tradition!

Anyone know how to make a gluten free, dairy free funnel cake? We are new to gf/cf cooking (due to allergies)and so I'm sort of at a loss for something special to prepare for that first day of school breakfast celebration!

We homeschool year round with a 1 month summer break. We usually start back up a couple weeks after our public school system does so that I can take advantage of the clearanced school supplies. I remember growing up school shopping and the first day of school being the most exciting events about public school, so I try to reinvent that excitement for my 3 kids. All new school supplies, and and I redecorate the classroom the night before while they are asleep. We also take first day pictures. My two youngest, 9 & 7 love two things about the start of our school days. One is for me to have backpacks and paper bag lunches ready for them, and the other is the school bus. They wait for me at a designated spot downstairs with backpacks and lunches in tow, and I am the bus. They follow me all around the house while I make bus noises and I drop them off at their stop in the classroom upstairs.
