Homepreschool and Beyond {Review & Giveaway}
Recently Susan Lemon, author of Homepreschool and Beyond, asked me to review her book. I’ll admit that I let her email sit in my inbox for a few days before agreeing to review it, mainly because I have a hard time reading books that are non-fiction. I do, however, have a preschooler and after reading this statement from Susan, something clicked and I wanted to review her book:
“Many parents struggle to know what to teach their preschoolers. Some take a “hands-off” approach, providing little in the way of educational activities. Others emphasize early academics, drilling their youngsters on colors, numbers, and letters while overlooking play and other experiences that are vital for normal development.
Preschoolers thrive somewhere between these extremes. They need a balanced, faith-based, developmentally appropriate approach that emphasizes relationships, simple daily routines, readiness and reading aloud.
They need parents who make the main thing the main thing.”
Susan Lemon
The subtitle of Homepreschool and Beyond is A Comprehensive Guide to Early Home Education and Lemons provides exactly that throughout her book. While the majority of the book focuses on preschool aged children, additional resources are provided for children beyond the preschool age.
Lemons focuses on providing all children with activities that are developmentally appropriate, not forcing activities on children that they are not ready for academically or even emotionally. Her emphasis is on the 4 R’s: Relationships, Routines, Readiness, and Reading Aloud.
The last ‘R’ is the one that struck the deepest with me. Our preschooler, {as the last of four children} generally gets the ‘mommy leftovers’. This year I am focusing on general themes through literature as the base for all of his learning, so chapter six of her book ‘Teaching Through Reading Aloud’ really hit home for me {you can see a detailed chapter list here}.
Overall, Homepreschool and Beyond is FULL of book lists, recommended resources and would be a wonderful resource for parents of young children to have on hand. Please see Susan's website for tips, hints, articles and more!

I need a little help with ROUTINES. Even though I thought I had a routine ... it was VERY relaxed. We tend to do school whenever we can fit it in. Luckily my daughter is a eager learner and would choose school work (play) all day if she could. We struggle with a consistent routine since we are always on the go, my daughter's sleeping schedule is not very normal, and my husband works two jobs (firefighting and construction) so we rearrange everything so that he can also spend time with Alyssa.

I need the most help with Readiness - in fact, I'm not even sure what it means exactly!

Why music matters to Preschoolers. Great article. Music often gets pushed back. I need to be more deliberate in this area!

Why Music Matters For Preschoolers
By Carrie, At November 4, 2010 at 9:59 PM
I feel like I have a tiny bit of a handle on each four, but I know I don't balance them well, that's what I would love to hear more about - especially about integrating more play into our preschool times!
By Carrie, At November 4, 2010 at 10:00 PM
Oh, I need help in all areas!! But if I had to pick, I'd pick Routines!!

I just saved her article "Preschool or Kindergarten: how to decide for your child" - it sounds like something we are trying to decide in our home too (with all the pressure to send M to preschool from family; if we send him to school at all, it will be to kindergarten, but no earlier).

I need help with Readiness.
Sometimes I think I either lag behind waiting for my kids to get a concept or a push too hard and scare them off OR I just move on a hope that it clicks later. Yeah, so I need help with Readiness.

I need help with the "Routine" part of the 4Rs. My 3 year olds just are NOT fitting into the routine I have with the older kids and I am beginning to get VERY frustrated!!!! At this point, I can use a bit of intervention!!!!! {grins}

I often use music when we’re having a tough moment at home. It really settles my son down. I will definely have to incorporate some hymns into our repertoire as recommended in the article “Why Music Matters for Preschoolers”.
