Tektoma {Review}
Do you have a child that loves playing video games and wants to learn how to create their own? Tektoma is a site that provides instruction on creating your own video games through video tutorials for ages 7 and up.
I was given a 3 month membership to Tektoma for review as a part of the Homeschool Crew and spent time navigating the site myself and watching tutorials to see how it worked. The tutorials provide step-by-step direction to create different types of games: video games, arcade games, fantasy, etc… and explain things very well.
The game programming uses GameMaker software {a free download}. While the website say ages 7 and up, our kids would have had some difficulty doing things independently and fully understanding things. I watched several of the tutorials, but in order to really start and grasp everything, it would take several hours of time before being able to start creating your very own game {which could get a little frustrating for younger kids}. Tektoma does, however, provide several ‘shortcuts’ you can use {premade race tracks and graphics} so that you can get started in gaming a little more quickly.
Benefits of Tektoma
- Safe learning environment. All materials and forums are carefully moderated for language, content, and graphics to make sure that they are suitable for young children.
- New content each month. Tektoma is updating tutorials and adding new information constantly.
- Learn at your own speed. Spend as much time as you need to create your own games ~ there are no time limits.
- Member’s Forum {moderated} allows you to post questions and find help if you need it.
Requirements
In order to use the Tektoma website, it would be best to have a broadband connection. Computer software requirements also include either Windows XP or Vista ~ there are no Mac options available yet. There is also a gaming software needed, but it is available as a download online.
Find Out More
Tektoma offers a free 14 day trial membership to anyone. The trial membership includes all the benefits a full member receives and has no charges if canceled within 14 days. You can also choose a monthly subscription {$14.95} or yearly option {$140}. A ‘refer a friend’ option is also offered. For every friend you refer to the Tektoma site, you can extend your membership an additional 15 days.
If you have someone in your household that loves computer games, Tektoma would be a great safe learning environment for creating their own games. I would personally suggest taking advantage of the free trial before signing up, so you can see if Tektoma is something that would work for your family.
This product was given to me for review purposes, and I do not have to return the product to the vendor. I was not paid for this post. All opinions expressed in this post are mine.
