Rocket Phonics {Review}
Rocket Phonics is a reading program created for children ages 4-10 that is full of fun games, jokes and multisensory activities to engage children in the reading process. It is designed for children with all different learning styles {auditory, visual and kinesthetic} with the goal of creating readers who love to read. Children using the program go from "non-reader to fifth grade reading in two years or less."
The English language can be tricky to learn. Even though there are only 26 letters in the alphabet, combinations of letters create all new sounds and blends that honestly don't make sense to little kids. Trying to explain how it all works can be even more difficult. Rocket Phonics focuses on 36 symbols made from letter combinations to help children learn to read with more comprehension and more quickly.
The program provides 'helpers' for your child to that show how to pronounce various words. As your child progresses, the helps are removed. By the end of the program, your child is even learning how Greek and Latin roots affect how words are pronounced. This is an example of how non-phonetic words are worked through in the program {blue letters keep their sounds and the other blends/combinations are shown below the letters}.
How We're Using Rocket Phonics
We were sent the full phonics program to review as a part of the Homeschool Crew and over the last month we've been using it with Zachary ~ and both he and I are really enjoying it! Zachary started the program knowing all of his initial alphabet letter sounds and we are focusing on some of the extra sounds {ay, ch, sh, th, ea, ou and oa}. The lessons are taking us between 15-20 minutes to complete and we are working four days of the week.
Depending on the day, we might play a bingo sound game to identify sounds/blends, use the 'peeker' to help Zachary focus on one word at a time, or play 'Go Fish' with sounds.
What I love about Rocket Phonics
The Kit and Cost
I would really encourage you to visit the Rocket Phonics site for more specific information. They have been wonderful and so helpful when I've had any questions!

What I love about Rocket Phonics
- Lesson plans with detailed instruction and virtually no prep time.
- Teacher's guide and student work is all in the same book, so no flipping from one book to another.
- Books are spiral-bound so they are easy to lay flat or fold open to use.
- It is non-consumable so I can use it with Kaleb later.
- Variety of games that are not just sitting and going over flashcards. Lots of fun games that involve movement and activity which really engages Zachary.
The Kit and Cost
- The Rocket Phonics program includes two large readers {teacher's guide is included in these}, Play & Read symbol cards, bingo chips, a Rocket Peeker, bingo sheets and big movement games for younger readers.
- Three free bonus gifts that are sent via email and include additional teaching strategies and games.
- Program is $160 {plus $15 s/h} and has a 90 day money back guarantee.

Great review, and it's nice that it can be used with such a wide age-range making the price more sensible.

We just finished the first book with my 6 year old son and it is amazing the progress he made in just one year! He loved the Bingo games and the scavenger hunts.
